Dinner Groups

Dinner Groups

We have a very close knit neighborhood and group of friends. Some of our friends have dinner groups. This is where four families of similar size get together to cook meals for each other. Each family takes one night a week and cooks and delivers dinner for the other three families. This way, out of four days you are only cooking one night. We were invited to join a dinner group this past month. I believe we live a frugal life, but my wife is also looking for ways to save money and time. Besides that, she wanted to do it because they were her friends.

I am not going to lie. I was scared silly, but I would like to share some thoughts about the dinner groups.

Sometimes you get in a rut. I believe this can easily happen with kids. They like to eat certain things and pretty soon you are eating the same things every week, like broccoli casserole. Why the kids love that meal so much I do not know. The dinner group provided spice in the house. We are wondering what the meal being delivered is going to taste like. I am surprised at what these kids will eat when it is placed before them. They have learned to not complain and try everything. It is good to have diversity, especially when it comes to your meals.

So what do dinner groups have to do with savings? At first, I thought there would be no savings. We plan out our meals and look for the best deals. I thought you would quadruple the recipe and still spend the same. That is what we did to begin with. The problem is that we always had a good amount of leftovers that would go bad. You don’t need to quadruple the recipe. You just need to double or triple it. This is coming out to a savings in our grocery bill. Not only are we saving money, we are saving time. The time about worrying what to prepare for 6 or 7 meals can be great. Then you have to prepare them. There is more time involved in preparing that one meal, but you end of saving a lot of time and stress each week.

I never thought I wanted to be part of a dinner group, but we are part of a group that has some great cooks. Last night we had these enchiladas delivered to us. Our kids don’t like the red sauce on food, but they were eating these things like crazy. I typically don’t like red sauce, but they were delicious. The great thing is that myself, my wife and kids were doing our own things when the dinner was delivered. No stress, more time together, and it was delicious. Have fun finding other ways to save.
